I've never been to a Diwali celebration before and I was absolutely blown away. The parade began to come along the side of the square and I was running and pulling my camera out of my bag at the same time, quickly cranking up the ISO, not wanting to miss a moment. Owls and elephants and giant birds danced above the pavement, all lit up in purple and yellow. An incredible amount of effort had gone in to the parade, and people worked seamlessly bringing these paper creatures to life.
The parade led the crowd to the main stage where beautiful dancers spun blue lotus flowers around as the story of Diwali began. As someone who didn't really know the story of Diwali, I was fascinated by how the children in the crowd were so involved in the performance. It was like being at a pantomime. I was totally impressed with not only the energy from the performers but also with how much they genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Of course, it was a joy to photograph. The costumes were stunning and the backdrop of the Town Hall made for a spectacular sight. It was probably the most impressive and enjoyable public event I've ever been to. I will definitely be going again next year. A massive congrats to the organisers, it was a really fantastic show. Creative, vibrant, compelling, fun, dynamic...what more could you want! I left with a huge smile on my face, so thank you very much!
I'm the founder of Tinska and aside from photography, I spend my time practicing yoga, reading anything from Beat poetry to Science Fiction and running around after a cheeky puppy.
